I think there should be a distinction between “grimdark” which I understand as this muscle-pumped, post-Frank Miller macho way of doing camp, and what you aimed for here.
I didn’t even realize that grimdark was that.
I didn’t even know it was a word, but it seems ok for this context, at least according to Urban Dictionary:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Grimdark
BTW I already have a couple of ideas for v. 2:
1) Furta sacra: The business of saints’ relics and pilgrimage
2) Death and burial in the middle ages
Seems good. I was thinking about an article on the nature of feudalism and it’s emergency, similar in framing to the one on cities and food surplus
have you read Ivan Ilich’s short paper “the dirt of cities, the aura of cities, the smell of the dead”? here: http://books.google.fr/books?id=q1Sq9Yy0qDAC&pg=PA249&lpg=PA249&dq=illich+%22the+smell+of+the+dead%22&source=bl&ots=ODQxGTcBvh&sig=AyoiVSt9vDIvdn0t3n03U637kQs&hl=en&sa=X&ei=uA71UM3eGcas0QWiz4HoBQ&ved=0CDYQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=illich%20%22the%20smell%20of%20the%20dead%22&f=false
looks very interesting. Sadly some pages are missing and a research in google scholar does not return the full paper. meh.
re pottage and not wasting meat: “every part of the pig can be used except the squeal”
…also http://muckefuck.livejournal.com/505593.html
Yeah. Pigs are awesome like that. “Del maiale non si butta via niente” is the Italian version, but sadly it doesn’t have any squeal pun. Though people sometimes add “and you can metal-plate the tail to have an handy corkscrew”. Often people fall for it.
Oh lol I just read your comment there
Aye wAr pigs are a thing. In kata kumbas war pigs are quite badass.
